Traditional TKD and Modern TKD
Kim's Black Belt Academy offers training in both traditional and modern Tae Kwon Do. With respect to traditional Tae Kwon Do, all students are expected to learn forms throughout their training. Each rank (Gup or Dan) has a form set that is associated with it and the student must become proficient in that form to advance. By recognizing the benefits of forms, Kim's instills a deep sense of traditional Tae Kwon Do in each student.

Traditional Tae Kwon Do
Forms benefit the student by serving as the means of developing fundamental technique, by making uncomfortable movement comfortable. It is also in forms where the student can express their personal interpretation of the martial art. Beyond personal expression, forms provide a foundation for technique and if done properly can also provide an excellent workout. Of course, traditional Tae Kwon Do also involves many repetitions of punching and kicking techniques.

Tae Kwon Do features some of the most powerful, beautiful and exciting kicks of any of the martial arts. Aside from the standard kicking and punching, Kims also incorporates some Hapkido (joint manipulation) and Judo (throws) into their curriculum. Traditional Tae Kwon Do also prepares the student for sparring in the form of point sparring. In point sparring the fight stops when one competitor scores a point, then the competitors reset. First competitor to score 3 points wins the fight. Drawing blood results in disqualification. Students are expected to wear protective gear when sparring.

Modern Tae Kwon Do
Kim's Black Belt Academy also teaches modern Tae Kwon Do (or Olympic Style) under the experienced eye of Master Kim. Modern Tae Kwon Do emphasizes the competitive side of the art with sparring as the focus. Modern Tae Kwon Do introduces the student to the latest in Tae Kwon Do training advancements and conditioning.

Ever changing and evolving, modern Tae Kwon Do can prepare the student to compete on a regional, national or even international level. Special classes are dedicated to competitive Tae Kwon Do and the students in these classes are prepared to compete in Olympic style contests. Olympic style fights are full contact and consist of three rounds at two minutes each. Students are required to wear full protective gear when sparring.
