Modern Tae Kwon Do utilizes a colored belt promotion system to rank the progress of the student. Each color represents a different stage in the student's training. The colored belts prior to black belt are referred to as Gup, all black belts are referred to as Dan. The chart below shows the development of the student by belt color all the way up to 1st Dan black belt.
